Executive Director’s Notes: Before I Was, Caught, Plot Point, The Times Are Racing

Dear Friends, 

It’s hard to believe that we haven’t been in McCaw Hall for a full, two-weekend, seven-performance mixed repertory program since November of 2019. We’re grateful for every milestone on the road to recovery, and this is a big one for us and for those of you who love new and contemporary work. You’re here to enjoy one of three powerhouse programs remaining in this season, which has been a triumph of health and safety protocols and constant adaptation. We’re delighted you’ve joined us for the four electrifying dances making up PLOT POINTS, and hope to see you again for our family matinee of Beauty and the Beast, Kent Stowell’s magnificent Swan Lake in April, and an entire program in June choreographed by the inimitable Twyla Tharp. 

Seeing this lineup in print makes me realize how optimistic and ambitious we were when planning this season last Spring. At that time we had heard of Covid variants, but not yet Delta, and certainly not Omicron. We were researching Covid tests, but had no idea that by the time the season opened in September two walls of my office would be covered by boxes of rapid antigen tests bought in bulk. If we knew then what we know now, would we have programmed all of these complex, labor-intensive works for Spring of 2022? We tend to be “upside up” at PNB, so I say yes: prioritizing work for dancers, musicians, production crews, and staff is a worthy pursuit, and if that effort goes hand in hand with offering you a beautiful few hours in the theatre? Double yes. 

We hear from our friends at public health that brighter days are ahead, and that’s certainly encouraging news. Like this time last year, March finds us deep in planning mode for next season – PNB’s 50^th anniversary. Is it optimistic and ambitious? Of course! Like today’s program, does it feature not-to-be-missed new works from today’s most compelling choreographic voices? I’m sure you can guess the answer to that one.
